The Most Profitable Fast-Food Chains Across The US

Fast-food might not be the healthiest thing to dine on, but that hasn’t stopped this industry from becoming one of the biggest in the US. The income several of these chains generate every year makes them some of the biggest in the world. Which ones dominate the competition in a country often considered the fast-food capital of the world, though?

It might not surprise you that places like Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, and McDonald’s are all heavy hitters in the United States, generating sales that are 11 figures. It’s incredible to think how much money we give these companies. However, when they offer such convenient and delicious food and drink, it’s not hard to see how they’ve become the most profitable fast-food chains across the US.

Wendy’s tendency to go viral has worked well for generating profit

No fast-food chain seems to know how to go viral quite like Wendy’s. This place always seems to be getting attention online for one reason or another, which is naturally great for business. As it stands, systemwide sales of this chain are apparently over $11 billion, according to Work + Money. That cash has been generated across just over 6,000 restaurants, with people supposedly particularly attracted by the breakfast and late-night offerings that Wendy’s provides. As these are areas where other fast-food chains might be lagging behind, the chain is smart to be going all in on them. Their $3 croissant promotion in early 2023 was a particular winner.

Taco Bell is the most profitable Mexican fast-food chain by a mile

If you’re in the mood for Mexican food, but you want it to be quick and affordable, Taco Bell is the place for you. You’ve got more than 7,800 restaurants to choose from across the US, with each one offering an excellent range of nachos, burritos, quesadillas, and more. The CFO of the chain’s parent company is apparently optimistic about Taco Bell’s potential, believing it could go on to rival competitors higher up on this list. Of course, it’s already doing incredibly well, standing as the fourth most profitable fast-food chain in the United States with reported systemwide sales of almost $14 billion.

Chick-fil-A has fewer locations, but its restaurants are still incredibly popular

While some of the most profitable fast-food chains in the US have achieved global success, Chick-fil-A is much more restricted in its reach. Though there are locations outside of the United States, the majority of restaurants are within this nation. There are now nearly 3,000 places you can go to enjoy its fried chicken, which is lower than some of the less profitable chains on this list. That just goes to show how much money Chick-fil-A is able to make, even with a more limited reach. Supposedly, a single location in this chain generates more money than restaurants in any other profitable fast-food company, leading to systemwide sales of nearly $19 billion.

Starbucks has apparently managed systemwide sales of over $28 billion

One chain you might not have expected to see on this list is Starbucks, primarily because it’s not somewhere people tend to think of as a fast-food chain. Apparently, though, because it offers minimal table service and focuses on quick orders over the counter, it’s just as much fast-food as Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s. Considering there are apparently over 16,000 Starbucks locations in the US, it’s no surprise that it’s the nation’s second most profitable fast-food chain. It’s apparently generated systemwide sales of $28.1 billion, a figure that would probably be higher if the food here was as popular as the drinks.

McDonald’s is the nation’s most profitable fast-food chain at over $48 billion

It’s likely to no one’s surprise that McDonald’s stands as the most profitable fast-food chain in the United States. The nation is reportedly home to more than 13,500 restaurants, with over 1,200 apparently in California alone. Systemwide sales for the chain are allegedly above $48 billion, putting quite a distance between McDonald’s and Starbucks. Of course, even behemoths like this chain have struggled in recent years, thanks to the impact of the global health crisis. However, the beloved taste of this food and the reasonable price of everything has ensured that this was nothing more than a blip on their continued journey of success.

Fast-food might not always be the best thing to eat, but the sales these chains are generating just show that health isn’t always a priority when it comes to food. It’s hard to ignore the convenience and affordability that these restaurants usually provide when it’s been a long day, or you just don’t feel like cooking. So, while dining at these places regularly might not be wise, their immense sales suggest people aren’t going to change their tunes anytime soon.
