Why Are Restaurant Workers Eating Out Less Than Ever?

If there is one thing plenty of us have noticed over the last few months, it’s that things are getting more expensive than ever before. Many of us have been forced to tighten the purse strings and cut back on a few luxuries we might usually enjoy throughout the month. Dining out might be one high on the list.

Still, it seems that cost isn’t the only thing stopping some people from heading to restaurants. Why are restaurant workers eating out less than ever? It appears that a combination of things has stopped those who deliver our delicious food from heading out for a bite to eat during the week.

Restaurant workers feel they aren’t getting value for money anymore

In recent times, there has been a shift toward creating up-scale restaurants to draw in the big spenders and trendy influencers. Still, restaurant workers are known to be enthusiastic diners and big tippers whenever they enjoy a night on the town. The problem? Creating so many up-market restaurants has left many servers wondering if they’re really getting value for money anymore. This also comes tied with the fact portion sizes are down compared to what they used to be, with many restaurant workers now wondering if they’re getting value for money when they dine as a customer or if they’re paying to dine in a popular eating spot.

Under-staffed restaurants have put many servers off dining out

2020 marked a huge change in the food industry. People stopped going out, and many walked away from the industry to find job security in other areas. That has led the Office of the New York State Comptroller to announce that employment in the sector is currently down 10.5% compared to what it was in 2019. The problem? Restaurant workers know this, as they work in the industry every day. This has also led many to avoid heading out to other restaurants, as they worry about the kind of service they will receive from servers if they’re already rushed off their feet.

Turn times are pushing restaurant workers out when they’re diners

If there’s one thing many people have learned, it’s that the more customers they have, the more likely they are to make a larger profit for the night. The issue comes for many restaurant workers when it comes to the turn time at each establishment. This is the time it takes to get some seated, served, and out the door. Something many have noticed in recent months is that strained turn times mean they often feel rushed to finish their meals instead of enjoying a night at a restaurant. In fact, Maeve McDermott, a sommelier in NYC, states she doesn’t want to feel “I’m being pushed out the door” as soon as she sits down to eat.

Some restaurants have started offering restaurant workers large discounts

Restaurant workers eating out less than ever before hasn’t gone unnoticed by those in charge of restaurants. In fact, many have been left looking for ways to pull people back in, with one cook admitting he now offers any of his staff a 51% discount on meals at their establishment to try and get them back out on the town. Of course, there could still be a long way to go until other chains follow in his footsteps or the offer is extended to servers dining at other establishments. Will it be enough to encourage restaurant workers back to dining at restaurants? Only time will tell.

It turns out restaurant workers are eating out less than ever before, and this could have a huge impact on the industry. After all, many workers in New York City admitting they have gone from dining out a few times a week to once for lunch at most could have some huge impacts on the rest of the dining scene if something doesn’t change soon.
