Some food only comes out on special occasions. Then there are the things that seem to make an appearance at every meal. One of the many on the list is fried onions. From topping our burgers to mixing them into sauces - or even crunching down on them in a salad - there are so many ways we can add fried onions to every meal.

What if we told you the frying pan can take a day off? That’s right; it could be time to use one of the more unexpected appliances in the kitchen. Can you make fried onions in the microwave? You sure can, but that might not mean we should.

How to fry onions in the microwave

  • 1 onion
  • A drizzle of vegetable oil
  • A small bowl

If you want to make fried onions in the microwave, you’re in luck, as you only need a few things. Start by thinly slicing your onion before placing in a microwave-safe bowl and drizzling with a little vegetable oil. Once you’re done, all you need to do is place the bowl in the microwave for five minutes, and it shouldn’t be long before you have your accompaniment. Just be sure to drain them on some kitchen towel before serving to remove any unwanted grease.

Fried onions in the microwave need constant checking

It turns out one of the biggest things to consider when making fried onions in the microwave is they need constant checking. In fact, it’s best to check your onions at 30-second intervals and give them a stir to ensure you don’t burn your onions. Plus, leaving your onions to cook while you get on with other things might mean the smell takes over your home in the blink of an eye.

The smell can be enough to put some people off

Some people love the smell of fried onions. Others? They would rather keep the smell as far as possible from their homes. Sadly, it seems that frying onions in the microwave could be enough to stink out the entire house. It seems the smell is even more pungent than when we fry them on the hob. Plus, the odor can cling to your microwave if you don’t air it out once you’re done or give it a quick clean.

Making fried onions in the microwave might not save time

If there’s one thing many of us love, it’s a cooking hack that saves time and effort. While frying onions in the microwave might sound like a great idea, it might not actually save us any time. After all, we have to continually stop to check they’re cooking and ensure we take precautions to avoid the smell dominating our house. Still, it’s a great idea for someone in a pinch or with no room left on the hob.

Can you make fried onions in the microwave? In short, yes. Does that mean we should? It all depends on what we need. If you have nothing but a microwave and you want fried onions, then it could be the perfect stand-in. Still, nothing is quite like the real thing.
