Top Tips For Making Healthier Decisions While Dining Out

Eating out at a restaurant can be a great way to spend time with our loved ones and enjoy some delicious food we don’t have to cook. Sadly, it’s not always the best idea when we’re watching what we eat for a multitude of reasons. Perhaps it’s time to learn how to make healthier decisions while dining out?

Thankfully, this doesn’t mean sitting back and watching your friends snack on anything and everything from the menu. Instead, it means making a few alterations and conscious decisions to ensure we don’t reach a place that makes us unhappy - all while getting to enjoy time at a restaurant.

Check the menu beforehand

If you want to make healthier decisions while dining out, then it might be time to prepare for whatever is coming. That means researching the menu of the place you’re eating at ahead of time so that you can think about the meals you want to order, and the ones you know may tempt you away from your plan.

Consider the breadbasket

Okay, bread is delicious, and it can be easy to fill up on the table’s basket before the main meal leaves the kitchen. Sadly, this could be all we need to add some extra - unwanted - calories to our meals without thinking about it. One or two pieces are perfectly fine, but it’s a good idea to think about how much bread you’re enjoying before you discover the entire basket is empty.

Order dressings or sauces on the side

There is no harm in asking for a few tweaks to your meal. Ordering dressings or sauces on the side is one way to make healthier decisions while dining out. This means that we can add as much or as little as we want to our meal without suddenly finding that we have a ton of extra calories from something so simple.

There are plenty of reasons that drinking water throughout the day is a great idea. When it comes to learning how to make healthier decisions while dining out, water could be the difference between knowing when you’ve had enough to eat and eating too much. Our bodies often confuse thirst for hunger - and water can help us feel fuller without ordering another side.

Ask for some extra veggies

Most restaurants have a host of sides on offer, and not all of them are the healthiest options. However, ordering some steamed vegetables means we have something extra to snack on throughout the meal without going overboard. Just be sure to order them without any additional butter or sauces to get the full benefit.

Box up your meal

This is a new idea to get used to, but it’s one that can soon become second nature. It all starts with asking for a box as soon as the waiter brings your meal. This means that we can box up half of our meal to take home and won’t be left snacking on the plate as we wait for them to return and clear it away. It’s simple, but it could quickly change our entire dining experience.

Thankfully, there are plenty of top tips for making healthier decisions while dining out. In fact, it might not be long before a few changes mean that we are making better choices than ever before.
